New Training Available: CVN’s The Safety Planning Intervention (SPI) with Youth

This training is for behavioral health professionals working with military and non-military youth struggling with suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Suicide prevention measures are important when caring for children and teens. We hope this course will help you in your clinical work and strengthen your ability to increase the safety of your clients. 

This training was created with Dr. Torrey A. Creed using the Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention (SPI) tool, an evidence-based tool. Thank you to Dr. Creed for facilitating this training and to Dr. Greg Brown for allowing us to share this resource. Learning Objectives:

After completing this training, learners will be able to:  

  1. Identify when to involve caregivers when using the SPI with children and adolescents 
  1. Describe the 6 steps of the Stanley-Brown Safety Planning Intervention 
  1. Create a Safety Plan in collaboration with a child or adolescent client 

Target Audience: Mental health professionals serving families, children, and/or parents 

Content Level: Intermediate 

Duration: This is an asynchronous interactive online training that will take participants approximately 90 minutes to complete, based on estimates from pilot testing. Participants will also need to complete a short quiz and evaluation survey that will take approximately 5-10 minutes.  

Earn 1.5 CEs, accredited by APA & ASWB. Participants who complete this training in its entirety will be eligible to receive 1.5 continuing education (CE) credits. In order to receive CEs, participants will need to pass a final quiz with at least an 80% score. 

Cost: No cost; training and CEs are free to all learners.

About Our Presenter: Dr. Torrey Creed

Dr Torrey Creed is a licensed clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine. She founded the Penn Collaborative for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Implementation Science and is Director of the Penn Beck Community Initiative. 

Dr Creed is also the Director of Clinical Implementation for Lyssn, partnering with mental health providers to use artificial intelligence to improve their quality of care. In addition, she is a health policy advisor to Partners in Health, supporting their mental health efforts in Low- and Middle-Income countries. She serves on the scientific advisory board of several mental healthcare organizations. 

Dr Creed is an expert in child and adolescent mental health, and she specializes in training mental health providers to deliver CBT and other mental health practices in community practice settings. She has published more than 80 scientific articles, and her co-authored book Cognitive Therapy for Adolescents in School Settings has been translated into 4 languages. 

Dr Creed works with mental health care clinicians, organizations, and healthcare systems in under-resourced communities and low- and middle-income countries to implement and improve access to evidence-based practices, particularly CBT. 

The National Institute of Mental Health funds Dr Creed’s research. She mentors students and postdoctoral fellows and provides workshops for organizations around the world.
